Legends League Basketball Rules
Game Rules are all (regular) basketball rules with some exceptions as follows:
GAME TIME & TIME OUTS
*** The commissioner, deputy commissioner, and league leadership reserve the right to make changes as necessary in the best interest of the league.
GAME TIME & TIME OUTS
- 5 minute warm up before games and 3 minute halftime.
- Game Time - 24 minute first half (running time). The clock will be set for 24 minutes to start the second half (running time). After the first made basket or defensive rebound with under 4 minutes to play, we will stop the clock and play to the TARGET SCORE. The target score will be set at 9 points. Example: Lakers lead the Celtics by a score of 51 to 40. Nine points are added to the score of the team in the lead. The target score becomes 60. The first team to reach 60, wins.
- Timeouts - teams will receive three 30 second timeouts. You may use one in the first half and two in the second half.
- This is a gentlemen’s league. If we can’t call a legit game by now, we shouldn’t be here. Make good calls and respect the calls of others.
- Offense has the responsibility to call fouls, but the defense is encouraged to call fouls too, including fouls they commit and offensive fouls against them.
- All Fouls and violations must be called by the players on the court. Fans and scoreboard operators are not officials.
- Shooting fouls- Shooting Fouls are always shot. Free throws will be one attempt ONLY for two points. The exception will be for an “and one”. An “and one” free throw will be worth one point.
- 3 point shooting fouls- If fouled on a 3 point attempt, the shooter will be given one shot from the top of the key for 3 points, with the other players lining up as if it were a traditional free throw.
- Bonus - The penalty is triggered when a team commits 7 or more fouls in a half. Each penalty situation involves shooting a free throw (2 points).
- Backcourt Fouls-Fouls by the defense in the backcourt will result in the offensive team taking a free throw (2 points) and retaining possession of the ball. Why? In our league, defense is illegal in the backcourt. If you can’t play defense, you shouldn’t be able to foul either. This is not exactly a clear path foul, but close to it.
- No passing the ball over half court. Passing the ball over half court is a turnover.
- There will be no full court press.
- The ball will be “checked” at the top of the key after turnovers, timeouts, and substitutions. The ball must be passed into play.
- Substitutions can be made after a made basket. The team wishing to change their lineup must call for subs and check the ball with the defense.
- Fighting and excessive poor sportsmanship is prohibited. Acts of fighting can include, but are not limited to: pushing, slapping, punching, ball throwing, etc. Such acts will result in ejection from the game and could include elimination from the league.
